The COCHLEAR™ CARINA®
The Carina Middle Ear Implant is a totally implantable hearing device. This means there is nothing on the outside. The microphone, battery and speech processor are all under the skin, so the device is not visible.
More information can be found on the Cochlear™ website
This is a video about the device on YouTube
(It is in Spanish so you may want to use mute)
The Cochlear Carina is a totally implanted hearing device. In other words everything is under the skin and there is nothing on the outside. (see diagram above)
- The microphone
- The battery
- The transducer – this part touches the hearing bones. It is a tiny motor which makes the hearing bones vibrate.
- A coil with a magnet in the middle. The patient attaches a magnetic device on the outside which is connected to a battery charger which can be worn on a belt. The device needs to be charged for an hour a day.
The Carina is a little more powerful then some of the other devices and so can help people whose hearing is too bad for those other devices.
Because everything is under the skin it means you can hear at times when you would not normally wear a hearing aid.
You will be able to hear:
- In the shower
- In the swimming pool
- While you are asleep
- Hear the alarm clock
I was fortunate enough to perform the first Otologics Totally Implantable Device surgery in the UK.
It attracted a lot of media attention:
